Government And The Government Of The United States Government
How many people are involved in a government decision to help a large bank? On the surface, it is a simple answer. Some might think just the banks and the government because that is who made the decision, and the banks are the ones that were helped by that decision. The United States government is comprised of leaders elected by the citizens. The United States government also relies on the taxes generated by these same citizens which help fund government programs, the military and many other things. A government bailout is ââ¬Å"a situation in which the government pays or lends money to save a company or industry from failingâ⬠(Cambridge Business English Dictionary). The governments decisions to bail out banks in 2008 re-energized corporateâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Debt this high drove all crediting to collapse because people could not make payments on their loans, due to the fact that they simply did not have the income to pay. This then created instability within the ba nks because the revenue necessary to continue was no longer there. All of things added together equated to the largest market crash since the great depression and governments intervention. Government help was seen as the only way to avoid a total economic collapse in the United States, although many thought it could result in a worldwide economic recession. On September 18, 2008 the 700 dollar bailout plan was proposed to congress. Fed Chairman Ben Bernake is quoted telling congress, ââ¬Å"If we donââ¬â¢t do this, we may not have an economy on Mondayâ⬠(The Housing Market Crash of 2007, 2011). This is when it became apparent that the government had a stake in this situation. When people begin questioning whether the United States economy will still exist, the government then has a huge role in the survival of not just the economy, but the entire country. The government is in a situation where it must decide how to protect the American economy, the citizens, the businesses, and the future of the United States of America. On October 3, 2008 congress passed ââ¬Å"Emergency Economic Stablization Actâ⬠(H.R. 1424- 110th Congress, 2008) which led to the lending of 700 billion dollarsââ¬â¢ toShow MoreRelatedThe Government Of The United States Government926 Words à |à 4 PagesThe United States government was created by the founding fathers to allow men to be free, but to also have a governmental system that protects that freedom as well. John Cairds Vision for His Production of Hamlet Essay
John Cairdââ¬â¢s vision for his production of Hamlet was to give it a ââ¬Å"suffocatingly religiousâ⬠atmosphere where ââ¬Å"the set was part cathedral, part castle, part graveyard, part atticâ⬠(Bate 202). Together with set designer Tim Hatley, he succeeded. Amy Gamerman of the Wall Street Journal characterized the set as ââ¬Å"dismalâ⬠and ââ¬Å"vacant-looking.â⬠The set was comprised of luggage, suitcases and old trunks that were stacked, torn down and restacked again in different ways to make different scenes. Presumably this element of the set serves the purpose of reinforcing the idea of Hamletââ¬â¢s journey of transitioning from a life free of pain to a life fraught with the truth of his fatherââ¬â¢s death (Vivier 323). Unfortunately, Kate Levin of Shakespeareâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Russell Bealeââ¬â¢s Hamlet stood out for his gentleness and sweetness making Horatioââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"goodnight sweet princeâ⬠(5.2.332) all the more poignant. Though at the time Russell Beale was forty years old and not the slim young Dane audiences had come to expect, his performance was one of a kind according to Judylee Vivier of the Voice and Speech Review (323). She says that the unexpected death of Hamletââ¬â¢s father throws him into such a sorrowful state that he ââ¬Å"is vulnerable, open and present in the textâ⬠(323). Russell Beale plays Hamlet as the student who desperately wants to go back to the university in Wittenberg. His academic tendencies become clear as he constantly writes down words and phrases he appreciates in his journal. Judylee writes that Hamlet is obsessed with words because ââ¬Å"they are all he has leftâ⬠(323). Writing things down becomes his way of processing the tragic events of his life (Lloyd). Many have conjectured that events in Simon Russell Bealeââ¬â¢s life affected his portrayal of Hamlet. James Harding of the Financial Times notes that Russell Bealeââ¬â¢s mother passed away during rehearsals for this production. The death of his mother perhaps led the lead actor to portray Hamlet in a much ââ¬Å"softerâ⬠way. This unfortunate circumstance may have driven his performance as the loss of a parent helped

Multidimensional Field of Healthcare Nursing
Question: Discuss about the Multidimensional Field of Healthcare for Nursing. Answer: Introduction: Flexible nursing skills are in high demand in todays world. The ever-increasing multicultural population in a particular region or globally makes it very important for the nurses to be knowledgeable about different cultures, customs, and other aspects that are different from the natives. Transcultural nursing is an essential element in today's healthcare industry. Not knowing a person's background poses a serious and significant challenge to nurses. Providing individualized and holistic care to the patients by the nurses requires the nurses to be aware and appreciative of the differences in culture in everyday life and health care, of values, beliefs and customs of each person. Cultural competency enables the nurses to treat the patients with superior care. Nursing research is needed to promote the trans-cultural nursing and ways to improve it (Aiken et al., 2013) In a census (2000), according to the United States Bureau of the census, it has been said that 30% of the total population in the United States, or one in every three persons is comprised of a different ethnicity and are non-Hispanic whites. This statics gives views of the multicultural population present. Additionally, the census also said that by the year 2050, 50% of the population present in the USA would be from different ethnicity. Approximately the 90% of the homogenous group of the nurses are Caucasian. Thus, the nurses have to be aware of different cultural backgrounds that help them to deal with people of different ethnicity. The holistic nature of the care provided by the nurses, which includes physical, psychological, emotional needs of the patients. As well as the spiritual needs of the patients. Nurses should be able to identify the needs and meet these demands of the patient, which will provide a good psychological back up for the patient. Care plans of the nurses shou ld have these needs of the patients addressed. The care plans should be changed according to the need of the patients. Optimal care for the patients is done when the nurses maintain the cultural competency in their daily care regime. This instills a sense of being known and cared for as an individual (Breier et al., 2015). Cultural Competence Nursing is a type of social work; cultural competence is a continual process of striving to become increasingly self-aware. It teaches nurses to value diversity and become knowledgeable about strengths in cultural differences. The nursing profession with a concept of the cultural competency helps to make the nurses more sensitive to issues related to culture, race, and ethnicity. Good communication skills, cultural assessment, and acquisition of the knowledge related to a patient background is the basis of the cultural competency. It is up to the healthcare professional to be sympathetic to the religious chains and work around them to provide care to the patient (Aiken et al., 2013). Developmental aspect: (Physical and Cognitive development) The patient is an African-American female who had a sudden fall in her house while preparing to go work. She was in good health before this accident. The patient after the accident is suffering from chest pain, back, pain and heartburn. These symptoms started from the day of the fall. She is also suffering from a severe headache and fever. The range of temperature if 101.4. Other symptoms include loss of appetite and feeling of dizziness. She was unable to describe other symptoms and denied further information. The patient said that she was taking over the counter pain medication. As a result, the pain would go away but come back after some time. The past of the patient revealed that she suffered from malaria when she was young along with stomachache and fever. She was also hospitalized because of an accident when she was young. She denied any other health issues including pregnancy and no abortion. The patient said that her immunization is up to date. The patient has a family due to which she have to take care of the family, and her daily work includes keeping the house in order, cook and clean. Her interaction with her family is very frequent, and her family supports her, her family includes father, uncle, aunt and sisters. The patient says she gets rid of stress using exercise, dancing, talking on the phone, hanging out with friends and so on. She has a responsibility to her family. The patient denies having taken any drugs, coffee or smoking. The patient says she lives in a safe neighborhood. She belongs to a well-to-do family, and her house has adequate heat and other facilities. Good access to transportation. She rarely ventured into community service. She seemed to be very reserved and cautious type of person Knowing patient history helps the nurses to communicate with the patient. Knowing what the patient is feeling helps to assess the state of mind and improvise the care accordingly. This enables the nurses to show and demonstrate courtesy, kindness, and sincerity. Empathy is an intellectual identification with experiencing the feeling, attitudes, thought process of the patients. Nurses who cultivate the art of the empathy, are very good and are aware of the other persons value, desires and beliefs. This helps in understanding the stages of development of the patients mental and physical health in a greater detail and helps to change nursing for the individual accordingly (Breier et al., 2015). Socio-cultural aspect in nursing: African-American culture is different from the European-American culture. The patient is an African-American in ethnicity. They have some distinct cultural and spiritual beliefs. Most African-Americans have a slave-rebellion and civil right movement background. Coming from a socially repressed background, they are sensitive to the behavior and attitude of people from the non-white background. This is an important aspect to know about the patient for the nurses. Firstly, most nurses are of Caucasian origin, and they have to know and tailor their behaviour accordingly. Secondly, the patient is already expecting a biased behavior so to connect to the patient it is very essential for the nurses to behave accordingly, with utmost respect and empathy towards the patient. The relationship between the nurse and the client should be aimed to enhance the well-being of the patient. The patient is very close to her family and has support from the family member. Socially she is very active; she e njoys dancing, talking on the phone and hanging out with friends. The patient is socially mature. The patient is also in a healthy relationship with her boyfriend (Education, 2014). The aspect of spirituality in nursing Claudia was born in Cameroon, brought up in the United States. Her religion is predominantly Protestant. Spirituality is a theme that gives the people a meaning and purpose in their lives. For many patients, this may represent family, friendship, achievements, and career. Addressing spiritual needs of the patient requires a genuine interest in the patient's lives; empathy is needed to connect with patients who are deeply religious. Spirituality not only deals with the religious aspect but also can have an effect on the psychological or mental well-being. A different interpretation of the spirituality can make the patient respond differently to the behaviour and attitude of the nurses. The churches of the African-American are called Black Churches. They are taught that in Gods eyes all people are equal and have equal significance, and the doctrine of obedience to God taught in white churches are seen as hypocritical, but they are accepted nonetheless in general population. African-Ame rican churches focus on the message of equality and gives a way of hope for a better future. This also comes from the history of slavery during the colonial times. Racial segregation plays an important role in the in the development of the African-American denomination. These socially diverse views from different people hailing from different background make caring for them a complex and challenging task for the nurses. Not just Christianity, African-Americans and other black community people makes up 14% of the Muslim ethnicity in the United States of America and Canada. Knowing about the religions and the religious beliefs of the patients helps the nurses in caring for the patients and understand the needs from the patient perspective. For example, if the patient is a Muslim, he or she may have to pray a certain amount of time, or keep fast according to the religious doctrines. It is the duty of the nurses to help the patient to lead an almost healthy life and having some semblanc e of normality during the days in the hospital. The patient gains a psychological boost about his or her recovery. Helping the patient maintain his religious beliefs makes them more amenable to the nurse's instructions and advice and in the end quickens there pace of recovery. Although the nurses are aware of the spiritual needs of the patients but sometimes the lack of clear definitions and clear practical guidelines makes the nurses very uncertain about the clinical care that is to be given to the patient. Spirituality is same as that of religion and is a mode of connection with other individuals in the community. It is a metaphysical aspect of society that binds likeminded people. Thus, connection of the nurse and the patient will be strong if they connect at a spiritual plane (Blais, 2015). Psychological aspect in nursing The patient belongs to a close-knit family and has their support. It shows a level of healthy domestic environment. The level of cognitive and emotional functioning is seen to be very stable. Due to this stability, it can be deduced that the behaviour, thought process of the patient would be normal and in co troll. The perception of the patient about the worldly affairs will reflect this stability. The pattern of speech, appearance, thought patterns to are seen to be normal. The psychological affair that the nurses have to deal with is the level of patient- nurse agreement or disagreement. The psychological nature of the patient determines how to deal with the patient. If the patient has a healthy and stable mental state, then it is easy for the nurses to treat the patient. But if the patient has an ill temperament then the nurses have to change or improvise their behaviour according. In case of violent patients, necessary actions have to take for restraining and sedating such a pati ent for providing care (Blais, 2015). Conclusion: Nursing is a multidimensional field of healthcare. They have to care for the patient need. The need and demand of each patient vary from each other, depending on place of origin, race, cultural and social views and beliefs. To cater to the need of the patients in this multi-cultural population, it is important for the nurses to know about various cultural and social beliefs. References: Aiken, L. H., Sloane, D. He faced nightmares worse than anything he experienced in Special Forces and let nothing and no one stop him from saving his daughter. From re-watching this film, I learned that the sex trade narrative has pretty distinct and clearly defined characters, and women play a role that is almost entirely object in nature. Sex trafficking is a swift and gruesome business. Apathetic and violent men use force and domination to unscrupulously control women and force them into prostitution, for the sole purpose of making money. This type of tragedy against women happens all over the world, from the poorest, unruly regions, to the well-established, desirable places. And in this case, Paris was the territory that demonstrated how crimes against women can happen anywhere and at any time. Also, I learned that in these films, women have very little power and/or very little ability to even protect themselves. This film relates to the class because it highlights many of the characterizations and themes that have subjugated women from the dawn of civilization. The man of the family usually knows best, and, when things go awry, he is usually the only one capable of remedying the situation. Additionally, the androcentric nature of all things underground and crime are also well established in the sociology of women. Men seem to be in control of the order of things in just about every situation. Women are almost always treated as objects or byproducts of whatever business is being conducted. The film really demonstrated how, despite the progress women have made in recent years, they experience significantly less power than men.

Aquaculture Essays - Aquaculture, Fish Farming, Raceway, Fish
Aquaculture Aquaculture is the farming of aquatic organisms in fresh, or salt water. A wide variety of aquatic organisms are produced through aquaculture, including fish, crustaceans, mollusks, algae, and aquatic plants. Unlike capture fisheries, aquaculture requires deliberate human intervention in the organisms' productivity and results in yields that exceed those from the natural environment alone. Stocking water with (juvenile organisms), fertilizing the water, feeding the organisms, and maintaining water quality are common examples of such intervention. Most aquacultural crops are destined for human consumption. However, aquaculture also produces bait fishes, ornamental or aquarium fishes, aquatic animals used to augment natural populations for capture and sport fisheries, algae used for chemical extraction, and pearl oysters and mussels, among others. Aquaculture is considered an agricultural activity, despite the many differences between aquaculture and terrestrial agriculture. Aquaculture mainly produces protein crops, while starchy staple crops are the primary products of terrestrial agriculture. In addition, terrestrial animal waste can be disposed of off-site, whereas in aquaculture such waste accumulates in the culture environment. Consequently, aquaculturists must carefully manage their production units to ensure that water quality does not deteriorate and become stressful to the culture organisms. History Aquaculture was developed more than 2000 years ago in countries such as China, Rome, and Egypt. Not long after, aquacultural practices in Europe, China, and Japan commonly involved stocking wild-caught seed?for example, carp fingerlings (juvenile fish) captured from rivers?in ponds or other bodies of water for further growth. Mollusk culture was advanced in the 1200s by the discovery in France that mussel spat (newly settled juveniles) would settle on upright posts in the intertidal zone, and in the 1600s by the discovery in Japan that oyster spat would settle on upright bamboo stakes driven into the sea floor. The concept of pond fertilization was developed in Europe about 1500. In this process, manure is added to the water to encourage the growth of small organisms such as aquatic invertebrates and plankton, which in turn are eaten by the fish. The United States system of federal hatcheries for the breeding of anadromous fishes (fishes that live and mature in salt water but reproduce in fresh water) was established in the 1870s. Much of the current technology used to reproduce fish in hatcheries has been developed by these federal hatcheries. In 1959 the first marine shrimp hatchery and farm was established in Japan, and it was the forerunner of the commercial shrimp-culture industry. The salmon-culture industry in Europe and the channel-catfish-culture industry in the United States both began in the 1960s. Methods Most fish and crustacean aquaculture is undertaken in earthen ponds. These ponds are usually equipped with water inlets and outlets that permit independent control of water addition and discharge. Ponds are stocked with a specific quantity of juvenile aquatic animals. Management practices range from pond fertilization, which increases the number of natural food organisms, to provision of a complete, formulated feed that supplies all nutrients necessary for growth. Animals that have reached market size are harvested from the ponds. In a complete harvest, the pond is drained and all animals are removed from the pond for processing. In a partial harvest, only a portion of the animals are removed from a full pond using a seine net. Additional juveniles are often stocked into the pond after a partial harvest, and the production cycle is continued. Channel catfish grown in the United States, and marine shrimp grown in China, Central America, and South America, are often cultured in earthen ponds of about 5 to 10 hectares (about 12 to 25 acres). Fish can also be raised in cages and raceways (long, narrow earthen or concrete ponds that receive a continuous flow of water from a nearby artesian well, spring, or stream). Often, several raceways are built in series down the slope of a hill. Cages are used to raise fish in lakes, bays, or the open ocean and are constructed of flexible netting suspended from a superstructure floating on the water's surface. Many more fingerlings can be stocked into raceways and cages than into earthen ponds, but nutritionally complete formulated feed must be provided to fish grown in these systems. Rainbow trout are grown in raceways in many places, including Chile, Europe, and the United States. Salmon are grown in cages, and Norway leads the world in the production of farmed salmon. Carp raising involves at least three different types of ponds for a whole life cycle in Europe. Special shallow and warm ponds with rich vegetation provides a good environment for spawning. After spawning, the parent fish are separated from the eggs and

By Comparing Silas Marner and Godfrey Cass, consider George Eliots presentation of fatherhood in Silas Marner Essays
By Comparing Silas Marner and Godfrey Cass, consider George Eliots presentation of fatherhood in Silas Marner Essays By Comparing Silas Marner and Godfrey Cass, consider George Eliots presentation of fatherhood in Silas Marner Paper By Comparing Silas Marner and Godfrey Cass, consider George Eliots presentation of fatherhood in Silas Marner Paper Essay Topic: Literature There are many similarities between Silas Marner and George Eliots own life. Both she and Marner discovered happiness again when they were middle aged; Marner was given Eppie and found love and trust once more through her. Just like Eliot found love with Lewes. Silas Marner was written in the Victorian era a time where class was a very big factor in life lower classes were not supposed to stand up to the upper classes. However at the end of the book Marner stands up to Godfrey Cass and speaks his mind. Eliot in relation to fatherhood believed in the remedial influence of pure, natural human relations, Godfrey Cass is the absolute contrast to this idea unlike Marner who loves Eppie with all his heart even though she is not his own child. Also like Marner Eliot was not accepted into the community as she lived with a married man but once she moved out of his home and got married she was accepted again, Marner made his way back into the community by Eppie. Moreover Charles Darwins discoveries of the evolution of man affected the way Eliot wrote the book as Darwin was one of the first people who questioned God; this is reflected in the book when Marner turned his back on God. George Eliot uses Silas Marner and Godfrey Cass as symbols to air current views at that time. By using Marner and Godfrey Cass she can openly express her views of fatherhood as a reflection of duty, by writing this book it is one of the only ways she can express herself, as she was a women. Being a woman in the late 1800s and early 1900s meant that you were thought of as being lesser and only needed for producing and raising an heir. Eliot uses two different spectrums of fatherhood; there is Silas Marner who is the adoptive father of Eppie however he loves her more than anything in his life my precious child. He brings her up as a model child. In contrast there is Godfrey Cass, who is the paternal father of Eppie, but he passes at the chance to look after her and to be a proper father when Molly Farren dies. He does this because he is afraid that Nancy Lammeter would not marry him also he feels that a child would be a burden to his lifestyle. He is an example of a father who only wants the child when it suits himself: thus making the reader question whether he is fit enough to be a father and even the morality of his character. Eliot firsts presents Silas Marner as being a person that likes routine, his daily routine present hardly any change he wants everything to be the same. He does this because of the wrong doing that was done against him before he came to Raveloe he was tricked and betrayed, therefore if he now he keeps everything the same no one can come in and trick him again. Eliot also wanted our first impressions of Silas Marner being a sort of recluse, he didnt mix with the community he sought no man or women moreover did not have a normal job. It that time in the rural villages most people were farmers- so a weaver was something out of the ordinary. Marner doesnt like to open his door to anyone he invited no comer to step across his door-sill. This is because his most trusted and cherished friend, William Dane, who was faultless, betrayed him, before this Marner would have done anything for him. We learn a little bit later of his love of the money that he has earned over the years. The money has taken over his life, work sixteen hours a day I do not think it is greed but is something stable that he thought could not be taken away from him he also views it as his only friend, he drew them out to enjoy their companionship. At this point it seems to the reader that Silas Marner would prefer the company of his money then friends. However we do have to remember how he was deceived and how everything he knew was taken from him. George Eliot makes us sympathise with Silas Marner as not only did he get his fiance finished their engagement and married best friend but also he was rejected out of the church by drawing lots. He did not do anything to deserve any of this. George Eliot decides to tell the reader about this before she tells us about Marner and his money. This is because we can see how Marner was prior to him having his life destroyed and before he became he curled into himself. Therefore the reader can understand why Marner is like he is in the rest of the book until Eppie is sent to him. Godfrey Cass is like Marner in as much as he is also a loner in some cases, he has his brother, Dunstan Cass, blackmailing him Youll get the hundred pounds for me Godfrey Cass is not strong enough to stand up to Dunsey. Moreover Godfrey Cass has married a woman from another village, Molly Farren, who is a drunken wife. The fact that Godfrey Cass is married it means that he cannot mix with or marry Nancy Lammeter. Being married to Molly Farren has excluded Godfrey Cass from the community in more ways than one; whenever he talks to people he always has a worry in the back of his mind that someone knows or is going to find out about his wife. Also because he actually never wanted to marry Molly Farren he does not have a loving relationship with her he would sooner die than acknowledge her as his wife. His brother tricked Godfrey Cass into marrying her and Dunstan is now using this against Godfrey Cass as Dunstan could tell their father I might get you turned out of house and home. Godfrey is well respected in the community a fine good-natured young man but they are worried that he will turn out like Dunsey a gambler. Eliot makes us sympathise with Godfrey Cass as well as Silas Marner, he did bring his misfortunes upon his self as Dunstan Cass may have tricked him into marrying Molly Farren but it was Godfrey was the one who said I do and signed the papers. He does get what he deserved from marrying Molly Farren and not owning up to the fact that Eppie is his daughter. When Godfrey Cass and his brother are talking in front of the fire Eliots tone is quite sarcastic when Dunstan is talking. Well, master Godfrey he has no respect for his older brother and knows that he can manipulate Godfrey into doing what he wants. Fireplaces make a room warm and cosy, but Godfrey Cass has his back to the fire like he does not want its warmth and does not want to really be in there with Dunstan. The Cass family is damaged they are missing a women around the house the squires wife had died Godfrey is missing love and care which he probably got from his mother, and it does not seem like his father has taken over the role of looking after his children properly. Silas Marner lets Eppie make her own decisions at the end of the book when Godfrey Cass comes to claim Eppie as his own Marner lets her decided where she whether to stay or go. Speak to the child. He knows he might loose her but still gives her a choice. Godfrey Cass although not actually looking after Eppie he still cared about her and I think is why he wanted her back at the end. When he first gave her up he was only thinking of himself however, when he lets Eppie stay with Marner he does it out of love and wanting her to be happy. Parents should also be able to talk with their child and understand their problems to try and help the child with them. Marner seems to care more about Eppie more then Cass snatch her up and cover her with half-sobbing kisses. Even though Eppie has just run away Marner does not shout at her but is only happy to see her. We do not know however, that this is the case as Godfrey Cass has never actually had the chance of bringing Eppie up and showing her his love, so one does not know whether he would act like this or not. Squire Cass does not hold many of the qualities that it takes to bring up a child. He just sees them as heirs to carry on his name and not as actual people, ill turn the pack of you out of the house together, and marry again. He doesnt realise that everyone makes mistakes and that a parent should forgive them. When Godfrey Cass and Squire Cass are talking in the breakfast room we do feel sorry for Godfrey as the Squire does not talk kindly to him youve been up to some trick, the Squire has no understanding of Godfrey as he just wants to know where his money has gone you let Dunsey have the money?. Eliot also makes the reader sympathize with Godfrey at this point as he seems so scared of his father sir Im very sorry I he speaks very slowly as he doesnt quite know how to say it, or it could be that he is not sure how his father will react and doesnt know whether he should tell him. The Cass house hold never seems very warm and family like the Red House was without wholesome love this is because Squires wife had died but the Squire should have taken up the responsi bility of keeping the home loving, he seems to have shut away his children like he doesnt know them properly. Dunstan (Godfrey Cass brother) steals Marners money near the beginning of the novel. Then another relative of Godfrey appears; Eppie, his daughter. Eppie is accepted by Marner which is ironic as this family are the ones bringing strife to his life. It is no surprise that Godfrey takes little responsibility for his child until the end of the book as we know as readers that his father offered him little love. Godfrey does not claim Eppie to be his he does still seem to love her a conflict of regret and joy Godfrey, in some ways does want to care about her, yet his own happiness is more important to him than his child. There is a complete contrast between Marners attitudes towards the child and Godfreys. Marner loves and accepts Eppie as his own while Godfrey does not even acknowledge her. Once again highlighting Eliots presentation of good fatherhood by Silas Marner, On the other hand in Marners early experiences with bringing Eppie up the reader can tell how much he loves and cares for her. Shell be my little un he wants Eppie to think of him as her father and not anyone else, I think he has missed being loved and trusted. Moreover unlike Godfrey Cass Marner is overjoyed when Eppie is sent to him and jumps at the chance to look after her. Marner does try to do the best for Eppie punishment was good for Eppie. This was when Eppie takes the scissors and cuts her own ribbon that is tying her to Silas Marners loom. Once Marner finds her gone he is frantic with worry looking with dying hope. Once Silas found her he was not angry with her but quite the opposite overcome with convulsive joy. He did put her into the coal hole once his worry had passed. This didnt work as Eppie thought it was a game and went into it again on her own accord Eppie in the toal-hole. I think that George Eliot chooses to keep Nancy and Godfrey Cass childless as it gives Godfrey his just deserts from abandoning Eppie when she was a baby and when he mother died, and Eliot kept Nancy childless as it mirrored her own life, Eliot did not have any children of her own but supported her partner Lewes when they were ill, Nancy does not look after anyone elses child but does support Godfrey Cass when he goes to claim Eppie. When Eppie chooses Marner over Godfrey Cass I think Eliot is being a moralist as she has left Eppie to stay with Marner because he has stood up to his betters and has already had his life ruined once before and without Eppie he would be nothing. Marner lets Eppie choose whether to go with Godfrey or not I dont think this is so much Eliot standing up for women here but Eliot wanting to show how strong Silas Marners love for Eppie is that if she wanted to go with Godfrey Cass then he would have let her. Todays world has changed immensely from when George Eliot wrote her book but she does still have a relevance to todays parenting. We now have far more adoptive parents who love their children so much sometimes more than the maternity parents. She also raises some valuable points about how to parent; its not how much money you have or what class your in but how much you care and love your child. The roles of the modern mother and father have changed there is not as much discipline or respect around for your parents in most cases. Even though Eppie did not see Godfrey Cass as her father he did come clean about it and try and make it up to her, but once she said she wanted to stay with Marner he was heartbroken but still let her go, which is the same thing that Marner did before letting her make her own decision; both Marner and Godfrey Cass recognised what is best for Eppie. So in conclusion I think we can learn a lot from parenting from not only George Eliot but her characters Godfrey Cass and Silas Marner.

Critically discuss the key concepts in Conduct that explain our agency Essay
Critically discuss the key concepts in Conduct that explain our agency in social worlds - Essay Example In these social interactions, we usually have the concept of ââ¬Å"conductâ⬠wherein we do activities in a manner that is acceptable to the surrounding environment where we are and these activities should be understandable considering the individuals who will be affected by the action. ââ¬Å"Conductâ⬠is greatly influenced by agency. In this paper, we will critically discuss the key concepts in conduct that explain our agency in social worlds. Agency, in the social sciences, refers to the capacity of individuals to act independently and to make their own free choices. For example, given a situation wherein there is a rape victim and a doctor. A decision of the doctor is needed whether the raped victim is allowed to have an abortion or not. We all know that abortion is not universally accepted because of difference in the concept of morality. We must all consider that one's agency is one's independent capability or ability to act on one's will. Although independent, this a bility is greatly influenced by the cognitive belief structure of the individual. ... Disagreement on the extent of one's agency with others and even the society often causes conflict between parties. Conduct can be defined in many ways. The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) even has considered several definitions for the word ââ¬Å"conductâ⬠. It can refer to the action or manner of conducting, directing, managing or carrying on any actions or activities like business, performance, process and course. It is related to the ways in which an organization, social activity or process is assembles, carried out, managed and regulated. For example, the manner in which a speech for the declaration of independence of a colonized country is done. For this social activity to be successfully done, we should consider a lot of things. First of all, the person who will do the speech should be a reliable speaker. That person should be known as an advocate of freedom, since it is an independence speech. The content of the speech should be concise yet fruitful. Every word should hav e a great impact to its audience. In relation to this, the audience should also be taken into consideration. The speech should be appropriate to the audience or else it will only produce conflicts and the message of the speech would not be efficiently conveyed. Hence, there are many considerations to look into for a certain social activity to be ââ¬Å"conductedâ⬠. The individualââ¬â¢s agency should also be considered whenever ââ¬Å"conductingâ⬠a certain social activity or process. The agency should be suitable to the objective of the conduct. The word ââ¬Å"conductâ⬠can also be seen in the perspective of behavior wherein it refers as the manner of conducting oneself or oneââ¬â¢s life usually with influence of moral quality.

PRJ1 Security Tool - Assignment Example However, when used non-ethically, hackers can also utilize this tool to extract information of the network traffic deprived of any sort of authorization (Ethereal. 2007). Wire Shark is categorized in the list of open source tools and was released on a GNU public license. As per the GPL, the complete source code is free. The open source tool can be modified as per business requirements. The importance of this tool is significant, as securing the network requires specialized software or tool that penetrates within the network for detecting anomalies. Previously, these specialized tools were very expensive and proprietary. However, with the launch of Ethereal, this trend has changed. Some of the functions that Wire Shark provides to its users are: As mentioned before, compatible on both UNIX and Microsoft platforms Regardless of interface type, captures network traffic and display packets on the screen Incorporates ââ¬Ëtcpdumpââ¬â¢ for displaying captured packets. ... (Sharpe, Ed Warnicke et al.) As shown in fig 1.1, wire shark has captured some packets and is ready for further query. Figure 1.1 Wire shark GUI illustrates three panes. (Sharpe, Ed Warnicke et al.) The first pane i.e. the top one is called the packet list, as it shows the summary of every captured data packet. Users can click on any one of the captured packet to get the properties that are illustrated in the next two panes. Likewise, the middle pane is comprised of tree structure that can be expanded further. (Sharpe, Ed Warnicke et al.) The further expanded properties show frame count, interface type, protocol type and TCP properties. Moreover, the upper left corner at fig 1.1 displays a filter tab that can be used to filter the packet types, as per interest. Furthermore, new protocols can also be added, as it is an open source tool and they can be called as modules or can be constructed in sources. (Sharpe, Ed Warnicke et al.) Some of the protocols that are not common and can be a dded in the tool are 802.1q Virtual LAN, 802.1x Authentication, AFS (4.0) Replication Server call declarations, AOL Instant Messenger, ATM, ATM LAN Emulation, Ad hoc on-demand Distance Vector Routing Protocol, Ad hoc on-demand Distance Vector Routing Protocol v6 etc. (Sharpe, Ed Warnicke et al.) The Medication Technician Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 6250 words
The Medication Technician - Essay Example Medication technicians are also referred to as medication aides, medication assistants, certified residential care medication aide, medication assistive person, registered medication aide, medication aide credentialed, qualified medication aide, etc. The duties of medication aides are determined according to the medical practice act of every state. It is not required for medical assistants working under the direct supervision of a physician to become a medication technician in order to be able to administer medication. A medication technician is involved in distributing and administering medications to patients. They usually work under doctoral supervision. They assist patients in consuming medications topically, orally or intravenously. They are required to follow strict medical protocol and administer correct dosages in the right manner. They are also required to supervise patients to make sure that no adverse reactions are occurring. The complete medication history and medication records of patients have to be maintained by medication technicians for each medication that has been administered (Durgin and Hanan, 2004). A medication technician is required to know the proper methodology of administering all kinds of medications, whether they are administered topically, orally, intravenously, vaginally, rectally or transdermally. They should also possess knowledge on medication administration through nebulizers, inhalers and tubes. Medication technicians administering medications to patients should be free of communicable infections such as sore throat, cold or open lesions (Durgin and Hanan, 2004). This requirement is of importance, both for the drug administrator and the patient. Patients are often susceptible to acquiring nosocomial infections as they are week and because their immune system could be compromised because of radiation therapy, surgery and other such procedures in addition to other reasons such as disease, malnutrition or ageing.

Factors contributing to child abuse
Factors contributing to child abuse According to the US Advisory Board on Child Abuse and Neglect, about 4,000,000 children die each year as a result of child abuse and neglect (Bob 12). Child abuse refers to nonaccidental harm that is inflicted on children by their parents or other adults (Magill 218). Many people do not take child abuse seriously because they either believe that harsh discipline is necessary, or they do not realize how bad it really is. Both child abuse and neglect are serious social problems that often have a lasting negative impact on the development of minors (Magill 218). Due to the incredibly violent and graphic nature of A Child Called It, readers may not believe the encounters are factual. However, they most regrettably are true. The abusive actions in A Child Called It parallel those of real-life child abuse cases. Abuse mostly occurs in families who are young, poor, and single (Palmisano 228). When families are going through hard times, there is a lot of stress that comes along with it. With all of this stress, the parents take it out on their children. Having a crisis in the home heightens the chances that a child will be abused (Bob 15). A familys relationship is a very important part of the system in the household. Domestic violence and parental issues are also contributing problems in reoccurring child abuse cases. Parents who abuse each other are more likely to abuse their child as well, because violence in one aspect of family life often flows into other aspects (Rein 54). Families in which the wife hits the husband, the child abuse rate was considerably higher, resulting in 22.9 children per one hundred children (Rein 54). There has also been found a correlation between family income and child abuse and neglect, (Rein 52). Child abuse cases are more likely to occur in households where money is in short supply, especially if the caregivers are unemployed (Bob 15). Difficulty in the family structure can also trigger child abuse. Children in single-family households were at higher risk of physical abuse and all types of neglect than were children in other family structures (Rein 51). In A Child Called It Dave Pelzer suffers child abuse at the hands of his alcoholic mother. It was not like this all the time. At first she was a loving and caring mother, and then she changed dramatically. Together they used to have good times. They would always spend all their time together, going to the zoo and the park, until the family slowly started to split apart. Pelzers father was a firefighter, so he worked many twenty-four hour shifts, which caused problems between him and his wife. If parents are having problems in their relationship, then they take out their anger on others. In Pelzers situation, his mother took care of all her feelings by drinking and abusing her son. Most people believe that the fathers are abusers because they are bigger and stronger, but it is mostly the women. In fact, there are many households where the woman of the family beats the man: 80% of fatal maltreatment cases were attributed to women, that is for both child abuse, and spouse abuse (Carey 23). Many people believe that women are not capable of child abuse because of their maternal instinct, but woman are the abusive ones. According to Carey, 58% of child abuse is by the mother. Many abusers inflict abuse onto their kids because that is how they grew up. The severity of child abuse, and the manner in which children are abused, bears a strong resemblance to the type of maltreatment experienced by their mothers (Kim 54). Another big contributing factor to child abuse is substance abuse. There are some cases where there is drug abuse, but the most common substance is alcohol. According to the Children of Alcoholics Foundation, 40 percent of confirmed child abuse cases involve the use of alcohol or other drugs (Kim 54). In most cases, with or without depression as a factor, studies indicate that a major contributing factor to child abuse is alcohol or drug addiction (Kim 54). In A Child Called It, the abuse is done by Pelzers alcoholic mother. With the father gone, the mother made herself useless and drunk. At times while Father was away at work, she would spend the entire day lying on the couch, dressed only in her bathrobe, watching television. Mom got up only to go to the bathroom, get another drink or heat leftover food (Pelzer 30). Shortly after this phase of being lazy, she started to abuse her son, with alcohol at her side. Whenever child abuse is suspected, the most important thing to do is to report it. Many people do not report child abuse, which may result in the child dying. There are so many reasons that people do not report child abuse, and it becomes a big mistake: 60% failed to report child maltreatment because they did not have enough evidence that the child had been maltreated (Rein 23). Whether there is a lot of evidence or not, all child abuse suspicions should be reported because it could save a childs life. Also, around 16% failed to report because they did not think CPS would do a good job (Rein 23). Whether it is believed that they would do a good job or not, letting someone know what is going on can make the smallest difference in a childs life. One-third of the mandated reporters thought the abuse was not serious enough to warrant reporting (Rein 23). There are many organizations today that will help if there is suspected child abuse, without putting the victim in any further danger. For example, there are the Societies for the Cruelty to Children, American Human Association, Child Welfare League, National Council on Child Abuse and Family Violence, and much more (Dolan 60-68). In A Child Called It all of the teachers knew about Pelzers abuse but did not say anything. According to Pelzer, every day when he walked into school he went to the nurse for their daily routine. She would ask him to remove his clothes and check all over his body for new marks. All of the teachers knew but were afraid to say something. Mr. Hansen, one of the teachers that knew about this, even called home one night to talk to his mother. When Pelzer got home that night he got a beating because of it. Child abuse is a serious crime. Many people are afraid to intervene, but they should. Many people do not really believe that child abuse is as bad as they hear from different stories, but it really is. In A Child Called It, most things that happen in real life child abuse cases, was present in the book. In both real life and in Pelzers story, the family was experiencing trouble in the structure and relationships. Also, the abuser was the mother figure. And the worse thing of all is the community negligence. Many people do not say anything, whether what they suspect is really happening or not. Child abuse is real and Dave Pelzer experienced it first hand.

Gambling Essay examples -- essays research papers fc
Gambling, while it lowers taxes and creates jobs, it also causes addicts to lose money and therefore creates a higher crime rate.A Quick History of Gambling.Gambling was a popular pastime in North America long before there was ever a United States. Playing cards and dice were brought over by both the British and the Dutch. By the end of the 17th century, just about every countryseat in colonial America had a lottery wheel. Cockfighting flourished thoughout the countries, especially in the South. Bear Baiting was also a popular sport, but the Puritans banned it.(Ortiz 4)Almost 100 years later gambling in the West gave gambling a second life. Early church leader struck down all forms of gambling and so in the East gambling for the most part died completely. Far from both government controls and moral interference of reform groups in the East, gambling became so popular in the West that Monte tables were often setup in the middle of the town.(Donovon 13)Organized CrimeDuring the Prohibition Era (1920-1933), illegal gambling was organized into an authoritarian regional and national system. Responsibility for the syndication of gambling is usually attributed to Arnold Rothstein, who invented the inner-city layoff. He is also known for master minding the "Black Sox" scandal in which the White Sox threw the 1919 World Series to the Cincinnati Reds to assure gambling profits.Gambling legally, once again, becomes acceptable.Since the 1970s, the United States has turned full circle in its attitude toward gambling. Three hundred years ago, the "sport", mostly in the form of lottery, was seen as a perfectly acceptable way to raise money for public purposes.(Savage 12) Over the past several years, slow economic growth, cuts in federal funding to states, and growing public needs have forced many desperate state and even local government to seek additional sources of revenue. Most states have turned to lotteries, horse and dog racing, and, most recently, a growing number of states have resorted to casino gambling as a way to raise money and keep taxes low.(James B5)Sports gamblingDuring the late 1980s, and early 1990s, several states have tried to introduce sports betting, either as part of lottery, like sports pool, or as sports bookmaking. Never the less, the leader of the nation's sports integrity, including the National Basketball Association (... ... spend money gambling," and 59 percent thought that "gambling can erode young people's work ethics." The respondents were evenly split on whether "gambling teaches children that one can get something for nothing" with 49 percent agreeing and 48 percent disagreeing.(Siebel 82)ConclusionIn conclusion gambling is alright as long as its is done in moderation. Also if you know that you have a problem with gambling you should call the gamblers hotline so that you can get the help that you need before it's to late. I would also like to say I learned a lot from this research paper. I hope whomever reads this research paper does so to. Works CitedDonovan, Hedley. The Gamblers. Analysis of Pericles Speeches
Although Thucydides provides a history of the Peloponnesian War, Thucydides spends a lot of time emphasizing the government and the citizens of Athens. Thucydides also focuses on the greatness of Pericles and his honest and patriotic leadership. Does this concentration on a democracy and moderate leader reveal what Thucydides sees as a just government? Throughout the text, one can see clues that a democracy is the preferred government of Athens, and the focus on Athens as the greater, swifter and more innovative power; he contradicts them with the passive, slow and cautious Sparta. This text not only acts as a historical resource but also a source that provides an example for future governments on how to run a government successfully. By looking at the speeches of Pericles, the view of Thucydides comes through. It seems that Thucydides believes in a democracy and giving the common man a voice in what happens in the city. Pericles emphasizes the greatness of a democracy in his funeral oration. Through his speech Pericles emphasizes that equality to create a free and law-abiding society.I think Pericles speaks of how there is no class consideration when considering man to be able to serve the state because he wants to stress that the most honorable man is the one that serves the state, especially in a time of war. Citizens that do not participate in the duties of public matters are deemed ââ¬Ëuseless. ââ¬â¢ The funeral oration is not just an honoring of the patriotic men that died fighting for Athens but also a call to all the other sons, brothers and fellow citizens of the honorable fallen to live a life as honorable as them.A democracy is a form of government that gives all the ability to participate, and according to Pericles everyone has a responsibility to take part. Men must put aside their petty wants and look at what is best for the state as a whole. The state as a whole can bring a lot to the people but a single person acting on their own individual interests can do little for the state. Why are there so many of Periclesââ¬â¢ speeches in this text? Was Thucydides giving the prime example of what a leader should be?Was the emphasis on Pericles putting a characteristic of him above those of the other men and leaders throughout the war? It is clear that Thucydides found all leaders succeeding Pericles as poor leaders. In Book 2. 65, Thucydides talks of how the leaders following Pericles were striving for supremacy, and acting according to their own private ambitions and interests. By going contrary to the moderate policy Pericles emphasized, a plan including exposing themselves to no hazards and waiting quietly while keeping attentive to their marine, the war was ultimately lost by the Athenians. Were the speeches recorded to also show how powerful a leader can be? When Athens held an assembly to determine whether they would concede to the concessions of Sparta, it was the speech of Pericles that invigorated the Athenians with confidence to declare war against Sparta. When the plague hit the Athenians and they had lost momentum in the war effort and were considering sending peace envoys to Sparta, it was a speech by Pericles that was able to increase the Athenian energy to the war.A great leader has the ability to drive the weak masses to great heights when they know they are under a first-rate leader and is told of the superiority of their state; this is seen in the example of Pericles. As a reader, I feel that Athens can win the war with their advantageous sea power, lands across the sea that Sparta cannot harm. By including the speeches of Pericles in his text, Thucydides sets an example of what is a just form of government and what makes a good leader in a democracy.

We be supposed to be well-known that when place furthermore sort related factors, the focal point is non in a minute on interior affair, but besides exterior mechanism. Green factor inside to the solid often can be confidential as strengths or failing. Although external to the house cognize how to be off the record while chances or menaces. This all factors are referred as SWOT Analysis. Based on ( S ) Strengths in SWOT Analysis is individualism or property surrounded by the group that is measured to be cardinal to the transporting out plus ultimate success of the undertaking. Next is, ( W ) Weakness. The nonappearance of positive strengths perchance will be position as a failing. An illustration is each is considered as failing is deficiency of patent protection. In some instances, a f ailing may be the impudent side of strength. The 3rd agreement of factor in the SWOT Analysis is ( O ) Opportunities. This classification has to execute with outside elements with the intent of will turn out supportive for income and growing. In SWOT Analysis classifies in last is ( T ) Threats. Here, exterior factors to could intimidate the accomplishment of the undertaking are listed and address alteration in the exterior ecological as good could at that place threats to the solid. This all method called as SWOT Analysis ( Wisegeek, 2003 ) 3.1 WHY USE SWOT ANALYSIS The complete terminal of duty a SWOT Analysis is to help you acknowledge the bulk valuable mark and scheme to follow right now establish on your present fortunes, plus to acknowledge schemes so as to will assist you acquire ready for the chance. Your activities into countries wherever you are burly, along with where the maximal asset of fact-finding the Opportunities and Threats you features. Based on these SWOT Analysis had questionnaires a little local concern owner Mr.Lim who is the proprietor of Sea Food Restaurant ( Timethoughts, 2010 ) 3.2 Elementss OF SWOT ANALYSIS I. Strengths Based on strengths I had five questionnaires. First is, Mr.Lim able to be introducing his Sea Food Restaurant by bring forthing different types of nutrients to clients. For illustration, from sea nutrient to nasi goreng, and kweteo basah. Stand out from rivals Mr.Lim good known as possible for how to run his eating house outshine from the rivals. Mr.Lim said some eating house do their concern without cognizing their basic cognition of concern but for Mr.Lim good known to how run his Sea Food Restaurant in local. Following, pool of skilled employees Sea Food Restaurant so far does nt hold any pool of skilled employees. For avoid this sort of things Mr.Lim maintaining good employees determines concern success. Fourth questionnaire I had is morale of the employees is quit high for Mr.Lim eating house. This because, every individual has different grounds for making their occupation. Sea Food Restaurant has different grounds for making their occupation. Sea Food Restaurant has strong trade names to their eating house and nowadays current construct of trade name grew non in of the purchaser packed goods with stronger ( Scribd, 2007 ) II. Failing Based on questionnaires I had asked Mr.Lim said serves skills the employees. Sometimes, the employees will erroneously compose order of nutrients and based on that clients will kick about it. Research Paper on Maritime Technology
Research Paper on Maritime Technology Research Paper on Maritime Technology Research Paper on Maritime Technology and Environmental Regulations 1-0: Introduction Two vessels collided on august 1990 near Gibraltar in Spain resulting in a sea disaster and oil spill. Sea Spirit along with the Norwegian gas tanker collided head on causing a spill of about 8000Tons of oil. Oil contamination in the marine spread far, even reaching the Moroccan coast in form of cakes, tar balls, and oil packs. Similar to this disaster is the major oil spill that occurred on July in 1979 near Trinidad and Tobago caused by the Atlantic Empress. The spill allegedly resulted in the largest oil spill of 287,000Metric tons of oil ever to be recorded. The disaster was never totally remedied since during pull away from the scene, the tanker continued to spill an additional substantial amount of oil. Conversely, the Aegean Captain also leaked large amount of oil. Some moments later on, Atlantic Empress sank deeply with its cargo remaining solidified. However, the spill from the two ships never reached the shores of the ocean. 2-0: Similarities 2-1: Similarities in environmental effects In terms of ecological contamination, Both Sea Spirit and Atlantic Empress caused major impacts on sea animal and plant life. Sea birds became highly affected dipping the insulating capacity among such animals. Birds became highly vulnerable to temperature changes and less buoyant in water. The two oil spills contributed to huge impairments and disabilities related to flight in aquatic birds (Horn and Neal 2006, para 3). In fact, species found it hard to escape from predators. Research shows that the spillage especially from the Atlantic Empress led to the ingestion of oil by birds and covering on their feathers. This caused kidney damage, digestive system problems, as well as liver functionality among the victimized animals. The two disasters also attracted scientists who wanted to explore the far-reaching effects of oil spill on both human and marine life. Marine scientist realized that the disasters caused metabolic problems and dehydration to birds of the sea. Sea animals with a lot of fur were also affected in related ways as well. Sea spirit oil spill and Atlantic Empress oil disaster caused massive deaths of animals, fish, and birds. 2-2: Global reaction The two incidents caused severe damaging effects on archaeological, highs include shorelines, ports, marine sanctuaries, and natural reserves. Immense losses were also realized in connection to these effects. Tourist and recreational activities were in jeopardy as the major hospitality operations became seriously affected. The two oil spills also share similarity in the manner as evidenced by way of worldââ¬â¢s response to the resulting disastrous effects. Many governments raised environmental concerns and documented procedures to curtail the disaster. For instance, in the case of Atlantic Empress, the U.S government played a paramount role in guaranteeing that the disaster was duly controlled to avoid further loss of life on the vulnerable sea creatures. Similarly, in 1990 during the Sea Spirit disaster, the government of Spain became responsible for the spillage and undertook measures to ensure that no more environmental issues were coming up as a result of the spillage (Horn and Neal 2006, para 3). Again, the two accidents resulted in the enactment of strict laws governing oil transportation in the sea. For example, during the case of the Atlantic Empress, the U.S government implemented laws to ensure that any ship transporting oil across the sea or ocean must be fully insured. The cover is intended to cover expenses and environmental losses associated with oil spill. Nation states affected by the two oil spills reacted with some degree of apprehension especially on matters of environment. For example, the Atlantic Empress oil spill caused uproar among the affected countries. Both oil spills reached the shoreline of countries that raised an alarm regarding the matter of clean up, avoidance as well as control on the same. 2-3: Clean up strategies Measures employed by the two incidents to clean up the mess were similar. Both incidents used Vacuum and centrifuge process whereby oil is sucked up plus water. Then there is the utilization of appropriate centrifuge to separate water from oil. This technique allows the ship to be virtually filled by pure oil. In this case, water returns to the sea. This process was particularly used in the oil spill of 1979 and equally applied in the Sea Spirit oil spill disaster in early1990. However, there is extremely small quantity of oil that spilt back to the sea. This crisis has restricted the use of centrifuges because U.S regime has prohibited oil by volume that is usually returned to the sea with water. Booms were also used in both incidents to clean up the oil spill. Booms are big floating obstacles that prevent oil by rounding up the oil and separating it from water. Skimmers that skim the oil were also utilized in separating all oils from water in the Atlantic Empress and Sea Spirit inc idents (ITOPFL 2010, para 2). Using of biological agents that break down oil into biodegradable composites has been used expansively in major oil spill. Experts insinuated this as the single safe and most importantly effective approach that is likely to eradicate a considerable amount of oil without posing any dangerous effects to animal, fish, or any aquatic and bird life. For instance, Bioremediation was a widespread attribute in the two accidents. It entails the employment of hydrophobic substance that has no bacteria. The compound binds chemically and physically on soluble hydrocarbon compounds. The Bioremediation compound acts as a herding substance inside, and most importantly on water surface. This results in floating elements on the surface of water plus the soluble substances like phenols which form a gel-like substance. Spraying the oil spill with the compound eliminates the oil molecules in a very short time. Specific bacteria dissolve hydrocarbons into carbon-dioxide and water. Another approach that w as used to contain the spill is control burning. Control burning is typically applied during low windy day as it may spread to other areas causing more damage during windy seasons. The two disasters also forced the experts to use vacuum in eliminating oil from water surfaces and equally in the beaches (ITOPF 2010, para 4). 2-4: Prevention Another striking likeness between the resulting two disasters is the manner in which offshore oil spill was prevented and addressed. Technological evaluation and procedures were employed to guarantee that all strategies as well as measures during training, monitoring, and reliable plans for avoidance and offshore control were met. In the two accidents, response involved technological monitoring of devices along with methods of cleaning up the spill. Other measures included detection, control, averting, as well as restoration of the habitats and natural environments (ITOPF 2010, para 6). In reaction to Atlantic Empress oil spill, the U.S. government used blow out preventer for well drilling. The equipment is effectively employed in offshore wells and contains a bundle of independently operated cutoff processes, thus there is redundancy if any failure occurs. The device is suitable for deep eater horizon. Another prevention mechanism that was seen in the 1990 Sea Spirit accident is the use of the Casing device. This is usually a set of nested metal pipes made of steel and embedded on the ship walls. Both split ends of the apparatus are suspended by a thin adapter in lower end of the casing. If the sole casing or at times the cement fails to work, the oil will continue spilling (ITOPF 2010, para 6). 3-0: Differences 3-1: Volume of spill A remarkable disparity between the two catastrophes is evidenced by the resulting volume of spill. For example, Atlantic Empress resulted in a spill of about 280,000Tons while Sea Spirit reporting enormous 8,000Tons of oil. This further does indicate that the sizes of the two vessels or tankers also varied greatly. Atlantic Empress spilled oil twice in the process of being removed from the sea while the Sea Spirit spilled oil only once. This also translates into a difference in the area covered by the spill. Apparently, the Atlantic Empress oil spill led to the coverage of a huge area while the Sea Spirit just covered a relatively small area. Additionally, the number of all affected species was proportional to the spill. Because the Atlantic Empress oil spill was very huge, it means that the number of species affected was also large (Egawhary 2011, para 2). 3-2: Effects on tourism activities Atlantic Empress accident had major effects on leisure activities such as tourism. Most of the shores that were used by tourists as areas of recreation became highly polluted and inaccessible due to oil spill. Notwithstanding the attempt by the then regime to control the spread or reach of the alleged spill, the losses incurred were very huge and had enormous negative significance on the economy. Converse to this, the latter catastrophe that occurred in year 1990 had minimal effects on recreational activities because the spread was easily controlled. Ease of control is related to the quantity of the entire spill. It is perceptible that the first spill that happened in 1979 was larger than the one that happened in 1990. Consequently, this is the rationale why the economic effects in terms of tourism became great in the first accident (Fleming 2010, p.23). 3-3: Clean up expenses The practice of clearing out was very pricey with outcome of the twin catastrophes resulting to immense impacts on the budgets of the responsible countries. For example, the Atlantic express incident resulted in the loss of millions in U.S. dollars in mitigating the resulting effects. Alternatively, the little quantity of oil that spilled in year 1990 by Sea Spirit consumed less money. This disparity is connected to the alleged volume of the tanker and the consignment in it. The personnel employed to clear-out the spill also showed a remarkable difference. It is obvious that Atlantic Empress employed more people and certified environmentalist to clean up the entire spill, whilst executing other logistical matters (Fleming 2010, p.23). 3-4: Shoreline effects Shoreline effects of the two accidents also differed greatly. This is primarily premised on the degree in ease on cleanup procedures for the entire oil spill. The bigger the spill, the larger the shoreline affected and the opposite is also true. The spill that resulted from the Atlantic Empress affected a larger part of the entire seashore and also persisted for an extended duration compared to the effects caused by Sea Spirit. Also, the sensitivity of the shoreline depends on the exposure of the spill. Floating oil makes the shoreline be at certain risks through sealing of the substrate with oil packs. Atlantic Empress oil spill resulted in the casing of the substrate at the very shoreline because of the huge spread. Difference in substrate among the various types of shorelines differed in their reaction to oiling processes. There was also a huge discrepancy on shoreline productivity. For example, all animals living on the shoreline were severely affected by the Atlantic Empress oil spill as opposed to Sea Spirit disaster (NOAA 2010, para 2). 3-5: Global reaction The world reaction to the two oil spills differed greatly with the Atlantic Empress oil spill facing a lot of criticism from other nations (Egawhary 2011, para 2). This is attributed to the volume and the area covered by the spillage. Tough measures were put in place by international community to ensure that the country that owned the consignment became totally answerable and responsible for the spillage. Such policies negatively affected the budget of U.S because a lot of money was used in the cleanup process. Sanctions also became the order of the day by other countries wanting the responsible parties to own up to their actions. The 1990 oil spill resulted in major sanctions being made in Spainââ¬â¢s oil industry. Also, losses became huge with economies of the country affected becoming fragile due to the expenditure. The economy of U.S became badly affected especially by the Atlantic Empress oil spill. Countries that depended on U.S for aid also became involved in the process and supported the country from criticism. There was increase in tension between countries that supported the U.S and those against. In contrary to this, little was heard about Spain in terms of global reaction regarding the 1990 oil spill. The difference comes out clearly here because of the perception that U.S was economically strong and it was suppose to address its problems single handedly (Egawhary 2011, para 2). 3-6: Prevention and control Main differences linking the two calamities also appear in terms of prevention and control. Atlantic Empress accident that occurred in year 1979 is illustrated by little technological practices in terms of cleanup and prevention. This is because of the poor technological skills that were available by then. Nearly all of the cleaning procedures were manual and took quite longer time to finish. Several devices employed in this particular incident were slow and time consuming. In contrary, the technology at disposal had significantly improved a little bit in 1990 during the resulting spill near Spain by Sea Spirit. The cleanup process of spill from Sea Spirit took a comparatively short time owing to the highly effective devices that were used. Sea Spirit oil spill cleaning process was also faster because the team that worked had much familiarity compared to the clean-up team that controlled the Atlantic Empress oil spill (ITOPF 2010, para 3). 3-7: Environmental effects There is a significant difference in environmental effects of the two accidents. The First accident which happened in 1979 which involved the Atlantic Empress covered a very big area causing massive environmental problem both to human and animal life. Aquatic species such as birds and fish became severely affected and most of them died because of pollution. Most of the terrestrial animals also died in huge numbers because they relied on sea food for their lives. The food chain was interrupted with animals that depended on sea food dying of hunger. Contrary to this, the accident that happened in 1990 had less negative impacts on the environment. This is because the oil spill did not spread over a large area and was also controlled easily (ITOPF 2010, para 5). Sea plants also became badly damaged by the Atlantic empress accident, whereas the 1990 collision had less negative effects on sea plants. Many scientists became attracted to the major incident and they managed to study intensively and came up with conclusions that greatly influenced the way of life of sea creatures. As a result of the first accident, policies were enacted to ensure that oil spillage in future is approached with a lot of caution. This is because of the double spillage that happened during the prevention process. It is clear that the Sea Spirit oil spill was controlled in a more professional way than the first one (ITOPF 2010, para 6). 4-0: Conclusion: Measures To deal With Oil Spills Oil spills are generally harmful to living things. Many sea and terrestrial species die in enormous numbers basically owing to unfortunate outcomes instigated by inevitable oil spills. If measures are not put in place to address this problem, the world risk losing very important species that could have otherwise contributed to biological diversity. From the debate above, it appears that oil spills have far-reaching effects including economic, recreational, and even social problems among the countries involved. Misinterpretation can possibly arise between the countries that are involved in the spill hence likely to result in wars. To reduce oil spills as a result of collision in future, numerous steps and measures need to be put in place. First, the governments should ensure that preventive mechanisms such as the ones mentioned above work well so that the spread is controlled. Oil companies should also endeavor to avail suitable training on tankerââ¬â¢s handler personnel. Incompete nt ship Captains can cause catastrophe that can potentially result in major oil spills. Handling of any oil spill cases in future can equally be addressed through continuous monitoring of ship movement in the sea. Stringent measures must instituted by modern oil firms to ensure that the ships ferrying oil across the sea are monitored by skilled individuals and provide information to captains about other approaching ships that are likely to cause collisions. Technology also plays a vital role in reduction of oil spills resulting from undue collision. Oil corporations should embrace the appropriate technologies that will ultimately lead to the reduction of oil spill cases in the sea during transportation. Such technologies include modern equipment used to detect approaching tankers or even ships that are likely to cause any crash and avoid such collisions. The captains of the tankers should be in a position to clearly see the approaching tankers using the binoculars or any device that can assist in seeing the approaching ship. Also, there should be intergovernmental treat ies that ensure good management and transportation of oil products. This will make sure that no one country is left alone to handle challenges related to oil spill, but rather assisted by the regimes that are deemed capable in terms of technology as well as finance in availing the necessary assistance.
